Shop Owner Interview- Apricot & Ivy- Safe Toys for the Holidays

Designer on Shop Owner Interview – Apricot & Ivy

By Tracy Rains of Pumpkin Noodle

1.) Tell us the story behind creating Apricot and Ivy?

My greatest joy in life is spending time with my daughter, Ivy. She deserves the best that I can offer as a parent. The quality and safety of the toys that I allow her to play with are a reflection of the love I have for her.

When my husband and I began searching for toys after her birth (in March 2006), we were continuously disappointed. The mass-market toys that we found were of poor manufacturing quality, bad design, and they were primarily plastic. I had also read an article online that debated the safety of certain types of chemicals found in many plastic infant toys and bottles (phthalates and Bisphenol-A). I was concerned that the amount of time a plastic toy was typically in my daughter’s mouth rendered her exposure levels higher than what might be considered safe.

After spending countless hours searching for toys that I felt were completely safe to give to my daughter, I realized that other parents were probably going through the same process. I wondered how they would find safe and appropriate toys for their infants and young children. And the idea for Apricot & Ivy was born.

I have loved every minute of running this business and hope that all the hard work will bring as much joy to the families that it touches as it has brought to my own family and me.

2.) What is your philosophy?

Above all else, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of honesty and integrity in every aspect of how Apricot & Ivy is run. We strive to provide consistently outstanding customer service.

To our littlest customers, we seek to provide fun toys that are completely safe, are well designed and manufactured, and provide old-fashioned educational value.

3.) Where are your toys made?

We are proud to carry toys from manufacturers located all around the globe: USA, Germany, France and Thailand. The toys are physically manufactured in factories located in the USA, Germany, France, Thailand, Romania, Spain and China. The description for each toy specifies both locations.

4.) What is your process in choosing a manufacturer for Apricot and Ivy?

This is the most important and most difficult task Apricot & Ivy faces. First and foremost, we seek manufacturers whose philosophies are similar to our own. We require each manufacturer to provide us with written quality and safety standards. We do not carry any manufacturers whose products have, at any point in time, been recalled for any reason. We maintain a constant dialogue with each of our manufacturers, primarily to inquire further about their quality and safety standards.

5.) What age range are Apricot and Ivy's Toys for?

Apricot & Ivy focuses on selling toys for infants and young children ranging in age from newborn to five years. Although, we do carry a small selection of toys for children slightly older.

6.) As a parent, how can we be sure that Apricot and Ivy’s Toys are safe for our children?

We take the question of safety very seriously. We want all of our customers to feel completely comfortable purchasing toys from Apricot & Ivy. We have done, and continue to do, a great deal of research concerning the safety standards and records of each of our manufacturers. We are unable to test each of the products that we sell for lead or other toxins, but we have letters from all of our manufacturers attesting to their toys? safety. These letters can be viewed on our website in the Resource Guide. Our manufacturers all have extensive histories in the toy making industry with no record of recalls.

7.) It looks like Apricot and Ivy donates part of their proceeds to Autism Research; Tell us a little about that?

We recognize that families with Autistic children have many heroes. We have a deep appreciation for the love and nurturing Autistic children require and give back.

Apricot & Ivy hopes to make as much of a difference as possible in the fight for a cure to Autism.

8.) What does the future hold for Apricot and Ivy?

We hope to grow to become a premium name brand for safe, quality toys. We would love to be a notable donor to Autism research. Lastly, we hope to open retail stores.

Designer on Designer: BioMe5

First up in our exciting new series "Designer on Designer", Tracy Rains our resident interviewer (and a talented designer) talks to BioME5 an innovative children's fashion lable focused on inspiring the imagination in our kids.

BioME5 Designer Interview by Tracy Rains

Daily Stroll: What inspired the BioMe5 line?

BioMe5: Children learn about the world around them from day one through constant exposure to a diversity of images and sounds. Like sponges, they absorb these sounds, shapes, and colors in a continuous process of play and discovery. We hope to create a sense of curiosity with our designs and to further develop familiarity with the shapes of letters, animals, and words. Vibrant colors, large letters, and easily recognizable animals create intriguing graphics but also serve as recognition and learning catalysts for the wearers. The inverse orientation of the words on the shirts is not a mistake; the animal name is clearly readable from the little one's vantage point – a fashionable way to use everyday apparel as a creative learning tool.

"...we learn through constant observation, research and experimentation, however, inspiration and intuition are dominant in our ever evolving process...
'nature is the ultimate teacher'...we rediscover, reconfigure and reinvent what nature has done million times before... "

DS: Who is BioMe5?

Created by two architectural designers (a married couple) in Venice, CA, Becky Nix and Olek Novak-Zemplinski, bioME 5 is an environmentally-friendly and imaginative children's company that produces products which are influenced by the constant visual learning processes inherent in all children, combined with an appreciation for nature's beauty and diversity. The products not only serve functional purposes but also act as an exercise in imagination and learning, all the while remaining respectful of the dynamic planet that stimulates the designs.

DS: How did the name BioME5 come about?

Like the designs, the name bioME 5 was inspired by the earth's various natural biomes (desert, grasslands, aquatics, forests, etc). All animals in the Alphabet Project (such as Sharks, Urchins, Alligators, and Jaguars) inhabit and depend on these environments for their development and survival.

DS: Are your Tee's Organic, Sustainable, or Made in the USA?

Made of 100% fine combed organic cotton, this lightweight fine jersey is exceptionally smooth and tight-knit making it just as opaque as a heavier fabric. The bioME 5 Alphabet shirts are tagless and preshrunk for comfort and wear and pass the strictest quality control procedures.  The tees are made in sweatshop-free facilities in the United States. As an added "bonus", online orders are packaged and shipped in "green film" biodegradable plastic bags, taking as little as 9 months to biodegrade versus up to 400 years for normal plastic bags.

DS: Are your Tee's available in Retail Stores as well as Online?

Yes, the tees can be found in boutiques throughout the US, Canada, and Australia and are being picked up by new stores everyday. Here are a few stores where the tees can be found:

Glitter Box, Mesa, AZ
Twig + Twill, Scottsdale, AZ
Lost and Found, Los Angeles, CA

DS: What size range do your Tee's come in?

Currently, the tees can be purchased in sizes 2T-6T.

DS: What colors are your Tee's available in?

The Alphabet tees are designed with vivacious and exciting unisex colors to maximize the impact on the pint-size wearers and the individuals they interact with. Each letter has it's own color combination. Check out the "Gallery" on the website: www.bioME5.com http://www.bioME5.com

DS: Any plans to expand the BioME5 line?

Just like the earth's biomes, the bioME 5 line is always growing. There are plans for new projects for the coming year...those will be announced soon. www.biolinia.com http://www.biolinia.com is actually the "mother" company that the founders worked on prior to designing the bioME 5 Alphabet tees. You may be interested in looking at that site as well. You will see that sustainability and constant learning is always a goal of the designers.

DS: What animal starts with the letter X?

A XENOPS! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenops

Thanks so much for your time.  I just love your line.  I'll be ordering some Tee's for my two boys soon!!!
